Porsche Revives the Six-Cylinder Engine for the Next-Gen Cayman and Boxster

Porsche has confirmed that the next-generation Boxster and Cayman will come with both electric and hybrid internal combustion (ICE) options, reversing its earlier EV-only strategy. The big news? The return of a six-cylinder hybrid powertrain, replacing the turbocharged four-cylinder engine that’s powered these mid-engine sports cars since 2016.

Reports from Autocar suggest the new ICE models will feature a hybrid system derived from the latest 911 GTS, which uses a 3.6-liter turbocharged flat-six paired with an integrated electric motor, producing 541 horsepower. While the Boxster and Cayman variants will likely be slightly detuned to maintain performance hierarchy, they’re still expected to deliver around 450–500 horsepower — a major step up from the current models.

This shift also marks the end of Porsche’s four-cylinder era for its mid-engine lineup. The brand reportedly chose not to update the existing 2.0-liter turbo engine to meet Euro 7 emissions standards, effectively retiring it.

For enthusiasts, this move represents a return to form. The flat-six’s distinct sound and smooth delivery have long defined Porsche’s sports cars, and its comeback — even in hybrid form — ensures that the Cayman and Boxster will once again sound and feel like true Porsches, blending modern efficiency with classic performance.
